In the Mysteries of the Prayer and Its Important Elements (Kit b asr r al- al t wa-muhim tiha), book 4 of the forty books of the Revival of the Religious Sciences (I y ul m al-d n), Ab mid al-Ghaz l delves into the prayer, a central element for Muslims. Beyond emphasizing that presence of heart is essential, al-Ghaz l presents remedies for a distracted heart and stories of those who were humble in prayer. Chapter 4 involves an explanation of the role of the im m who leads the group prayer and the importance of following him, while chapter 5 examines the merits of the Friday prayer, its requisite con¬ditions and sunna elements, including a number of manners and sunna practices for Friday. Chapter 6 addresses general questions, including such outward issues as what invalidates a prayer, what to do when one arrives late, and how to correctly follow the im m, and beyond this, he touches on more inward matters, such as whisperings of doubt. Chapter 7 addresses supererogatory prayers, and chapter 8 delves further into the daily sunnas, and then the weekly prayers, including recommendations for each day of the week, and for each night. Al-Ghaz l discusses the annual prayers (the two ds and the tar w prayers during Rama n), and finally explains the prayers and supplications related to events eclipses, the prayer for rain, going to the mosque, traveling, guidance, and need. This readable yet comprehensive work covers an array of issues from the essential outward aspects of how to pray and how many cycles there are in each prayer, to the inward aspects of the state of the heart during the prayer and how to humble oneself completely. As a practical, yet deep book, it is essential reading for Muslims who seek a deeper comprehen¬sion of prayer, and for all those interested in understanding the meaning and place of prayer in Islam.
