Well, this was a delightful read and a jolly good time! Angela Montoya did an excellent job crafting the world of carnival fantastico and I think this story will appeal to fans of Caraval or the Night Circus. Esmeralda was an interesting and refreshing new character with loads of trauma and many layers and the pull between her love for Ignacio and the hurt and abandonment from her parents, the betrayal of the comandante (and Ignacio as she falsely thought for so long) was really well executed indeed, I enjoyed her character arc and her journey to discover her worth and to feel deserving of love. Ignacio, has also his own demons to fight and overcome but it pulled at my heartstrings how he always new that Esmeralda was the one and even if she didn't love him (or so he thinks for the biggest part of the book) his heart belonged to her and her alone, beautiful and very emotional, really pulls out those first love emotions. The supporting characters also felt distinct and well fleshed out, I wouldn't have minded a bot more backstory there, but, equally, I didn't mind. The villains and plot twists were satisfying and the pace kept me turning the pages. The miscommunication between Esmeralda and Ignacio started to grate on me at some point, but luckily the very essential conversation took place and allowed for the story to develop and reach a point of resolution. I think the intended audience and fans of the genre will massively enjoy this.
