America’s sordid history of human experimentation rises from the dead in this unsettling Eisner-nominated horror thriller from Barnes (Killadelphia) and Italian comics artist Bonetti (Night of the Living Dead). A suspicious suicide at condemned Crownsville State Hospital, a real Jim Crow–era psychiatric facility in Maryland, abruptly intersects three men’s lives. Security guard Todd finds the body on his first day on the job. Veteran reporter Paul is spurred to investigate the hospital’s corruption by a cryptic deathbed confession from his mother, a former nurse at the facility (“Always s’posed to fight for truth,” she chides him from the afterlife), teaming up with police detective Mike. In alternating storylines, the men explore Crownsville’s haunted hallways: Todd searches for a swarm of ghost children, while Paul and Mike watch spectral scenes replay their personal secrets and the hospital’s experiments on “folks no one cared about.” The photorealistic comics have a scratchy overlay of cross-hatching inks that intensify the creep factor, and the grotesque art is genuinely frightening. The trio unveil devastating truths that trigger an undead reckoning, but as the heroes race to defeat a zombie horde, the action-movie energy ramps up then slows to an abrupt, simplistic close that begs deeper consideration of racial injustices. Still, fans of the Bitter Root series will dig this socially conscious gothic noir. (Aug.)
