** An Ace Double edition featuring the screenplay to Alex Cox's 'last' film - Dead Souls - plus the original Nikolai Gogol text **

The screenplay of the ‘last’ feature film from Alex Cox – famed cult director of Repo Man and Sid and Nancy and presenter of the classic TV series, Moviedrome – as he gives Nikolai Gogol’s classic satirical novel a Wild West makeover.

Dead Souls, directed by and starring Alex Cox, is a surreal, lean, meditative, low-budget Spaghetti Western adaptation of Nikolai Gogol’s classic novel, transposed to the 19th-century American West, that feels both literary and rebellious.

Strindler (Cox) claims to be a reverend, to work for the US census, to own a headstone business, to run a charity and to be an agent of the Mexican government. No one believes him, but it doesn’t matter as he pays good money for dead people’s names.

The film blends political satire with meta-humour, stop-motion and musical numbers. The story mirrors Gogol’s original novel, set in a dusty, morally bankrupt frontier town where Strindler travels, collecting the names of ‘dead souls’ to gain power and money.

‘A diverting and watchable love letter to the spaghetti west of the movies’ GUARDIAN

‘A riotous swan song’ NEW YORK TIMES

‘A brilliant adaptation of Gogol’s 1842 absurdist Russian classic’ FILM INTERNATIONAL

-----------------

A coiffured con-man travels across Russia’s rural backwaters, buying the souls of dead serfs from their owners to make his fortune, in Nikolai Gogol’s exuberant, bravura masterwork: the greatest comedy in Russian literature.

Chichikov, a mysterious stranger, arrives in the provincial town of ‘N’, visiting a succession of landowners and making each a strange offer. He proposes to buy the names of dead serfs still registered on the census, saving their owners from paying tax on them, and to use these ‘dead souls’ as collateral to re-invent himself as an aristocrat.

In this ebullient picaresque masterpiece, Gogol created a grotesque gallery of human types, from the bear-like Sobakevich to the insubstantial fool Manilov, and, above all, the devilish con-man Chichikov.

Originally published in 1842, Dead Souls is one of the most unusual works of nineteenth-century fiction and a devastating satire on social hypocrisy. This edition uses the 1922 English language translation by Constance Garnett.

‘One of those masterpieces that change the way you see other books, forever… Dead Souls has that free and joyful energy of a work of art that is the first of its kind, with no real models to fear or emulate’ AS BYATT, GUARDIAN

‘Gogol was a strange creature, but then genius is always strange’ VLADIMIR NABOKOV
