In this verse novel, eight-year-old Ray is nervous about his family's impending move to a new town due to his father's job. In order to comfort himself through this big change, he conjures an imaginary friend named Jacob. Ray's parents cannot see Jacob, but their family dog, Bess, can – something that matters at the end of the narrative.
Ray spends the weeks leading up to the move acting naughty because he is so upset, which worries his parents. But after the move, Ray seems to transition into his new school easily, even scoring a goal playing football with his classmates on his first day. But when news travels to Ray's suburban village that Russia has invaded Ukraine, his parents decide to host a woman and her son, who have become refugees due to the conflict. Ray shows great maturity by helping his guest acclimatise to their neighbourhood and soon they become fast friends.
The narrative embraces the children's literature classic home-away-from-home structure, which delicately emphasises the ebbs and flows of growth that Ray experiences. Delightful illustrations are interspersed throughout that show considerable detail, especially in facial expressions. Told primarily through the perspective of Jacob, Ray's imaginary friend, as he subliminally coaxes children through any tumultuous experiences they are having, later moving on to help another child. The ending is set up so that this story could continue as a series in each of the homes that Jacob visits.
