Morning in Marin: Zen, Drugs, and Ewoks on the California Coast

Opis

From Jack Kerouac to the Grateful Dead to George Lucas, California’s Marin County was the site of a remarkable mid-20th-century creative explosion. Former WFMU cohost and Marin native Perlis debuts with a whirlwind social history of this "seismic cultural awakening."He begins with lesbian poet Elsa Gidlow - responsible for "America’s first openly gay poetry collection"- as she purchases a "leaky shack"in Marin on "blind impulse."She’s joined by other writers and artists who gravitate to the region around WWII, including spiritual seeker Alan Watts and artist Jean "Yanko"Varda, "one of the first... great hippy persons."From these "muddy beginnings,"Perlis embarks on a wild, fast-paced tour through Marin’s decades-long underground scene with an eye on the entangled relationships between newcomers - among them Philip K. Dick, Janis Joplin, and Shel Silverstein - and longtime residents, including a young Robin Williams. Though he injects some critique into his narrative, like analyzing how the countercultural fixation on Zen Buddhism collided with prejudice against Asians, Perlis largely conveys the idealism and creative fervor of the period. He does so through an immersive style that recalls the exclamatory psychedelia of Tom Wolfe ("The Dead might be concerned if they weren’t tripping so hard and, man... wait, what were we talking about?"), which risks overpowering the material. Still, for those who can tune in, it’s a gonzo love letter to a bygone Northern California counterculture.
