Opis

What makes for the ideal woman? How should she look, love and be? In this high-spirited history, medievalist Eleanor Janega unfurls the era's ideas about women.

Some of these attitudes were not new to the time: beauty ideals of the Middle Ages, for instance, rested on the mythical and unparalleled Helen of Troy. Janega explores the paradox of real women being expected to look like goddesses while attention to appearance was denigrated as vanity by medieval Christian philosophers. Such men also cast Eve's shadow over contemporary women, deriding them as oversexed sinners, inherently lustful and weak. This era marked the cultural relegation of women to motherhood, but Janega shows that despite these expectations, medieval women were industrious farmers, brewers, textile workers, artists and artisans, paving the way for new ideas about women's nature, intellect and ability.

"If you are looking for some female-centred reading this Women's History Month, The Once and Future Sex is a great choice."-Emily Staniforth, All About History

"[A] lively exploration of medieval women's social roles"-Laura Kalas, The Conversation

"A hugely entertaining and informative account of medieval thinking about women… this is a highly rewarding read, which reminds us that we can only tackle present injustices if we remember that there is nothing universal about the ways in which people treat one another." - Hannah Skoda, BBC History Magazine

"[An] eye-opening and provocative account of the lives of women in the Middle Ages…[Janega] builds a convincing picture of the positive and resourceful part that women played in medieval society, not only as adjuncts to their husbands and fathers, but in their own right."-Christina Hardyment, The Times
