The Scarlet Letter: Nathaniel Hawthorne, Illustrated

Opis

The classic study of sin, sex, betrayal, compassion, and revenge, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is considered one of the great masterpieces of American literature. Set in a village in Puritan New England the story follows the life of the shamed and alienated female protagonist Hester Prynne as she is convicted of adultery in Puritan New England and forced to war the scarlet letter A that marks her as an adulteress for all to mock and shame. A crowd gathers to witness the punishment of Hester Prynne, the young woman who has given birth to a baby of unknown parentage. Her sentence requires her to stand on the scaffold for three hours, exposed to public humiliation, and to wear the scarlet "A" for the rest of her life. As Hester approaches the scaffold, many of the women in the crowd are angered by her beauty and quiet dignity. When demanded and cajoled to name the father of her child, Hester refuses.

The scarlet letter A that Hester is forced to wear is finely embroidered with gold-colored thread. As both a badge of shame and a beautifully wrought human artifact, it reflects the many oppositions in the novel, such as those between order and transgression, civilization and wilderness, and adulthood and childhood. The more society strives to keep out wayward passion, the more it reinforces the split between appearance and reality. The members of the community who are ostensibly the most respectable are often the most depraved, while the apparent sinners are often the most virtuous. And such is life still today.
